State clearly that you expect homework to be completed.
- Don’t assume children know.
- State homework is a top priority.
- Explain how you want it done.
Set up a daily homework time.
- Get your child in the habit of doing their homework at a regularly scheduled time.
- If homework is a top priority it should be scheduled.
- Set up a time with your child that will be the same time and place every day.
Check to see that your child is doing homework.
- A parent must monitor to help the child stay on track.
- A parent must also check that homework is done.
Provide positive support.
- When your child is doing their homework, recognize it!
- Don’t take it for granted that your child does their homework.
Back up your words with actions.
- Begging and pleading do not work.
- Give your child a CHOICE, explain that homework is a top responsibility. You must meet your responsibilities before you receive privileges. “If you choose not to do your homework, you choose not to have privileges.”
Work with the teacher.
- Stay in touch with the teacher via agenda book and\or phone calls.
- Teamwork is the best approach.
